Once the kaolin clay has been mined and harvested, it undergoes a meticulous process of processing and refining to transform it into the fine powder that is highly sought after in various industries.
The first step involves crushing and grinding the raw material to break down large chunks into smaller particles. This helps to increase the surface area exposed to further processing.
Processing and Refining of Kaolin Powder
Next, the crushed kaolin is mixed with water and chemicals in a process known as beneficiation. This separation technique removes impurities and other minerals from the clay, leaving behind a purer form of kaolin.
After beneficiation, the slurry is sent through a series of filters to remove any remaining solids before being dried in high-temperature ovens. The drying stage ensures that excess moisture is removed effectively.
Once dried, the refined kaolin powder goes through additional processes such as bleaching or coating depending on its intended use. These final touches enhance its properties for specific applications like ceramics, paper production, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and more.
