The current state of gold mining in Ghana
Ghana has a rich history of gold mining, and the industry continues to play a significant role in the country’s economy. As of 2021, Ghana is Africa’s largest producer of gold and the seventh-largest producer globally.
Despite its prominence in the global gold market, there are still challenges facing Ghana’s small-scale mining sector. Informal miners often operate outside of government regulations and may use dangerous techniques that harm both workers and the environment.

To address these issues, Ghana passed new laws in 2019 aimed at improving environmental protection measures and strengthening enforcement against illegal mining. The government has also taken steps to formalize small-scale mining operations by providing training programs for miners.
While there are still challenges facing Ghana’s gold mining industry, efforts are being made to ensure that it remains sustainable and beneficial for all stakeholders involved.
